London, Manchester, Belfast, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Birmingham are the first cities in the UK to benefit from the next generation technology, with more cities to follow later in the year.
5G is the next generation of wireless mobile connections following on from the 4G networks currently used by smartphones across the globe.
EE’s 5G network is said to offer internet speeds of 100-150Mbps, several times faster than 4G and the release was marked by a gig performed by London rapper, Stormzy.
As the coverage is limited to certain areas of the country, there will be some challenges for consumers who want to start using the 5G service on their devices, as, also, only a select few handsets are 5G capable. Samsung, LG and HTC are among the brands which make compatible handsets.
This introduction of a fifth generation mobile connection will increase contract prices considerably especially after Vodafone launches the service in seven more cities at the start of July, and competition in the market increases.
EE, which is owned by BT, hopes to reach 1500 sites by the end of the year including the ‘busiest parts’ of Bristol, Coventry, Hull, Leeds, Glasgow, Liverpool, Newcastle, Leicester, Sheffield and Nottingham.
This new service will offer consumers a higher speed service and more reliable connection on their devices as well as this network technology improving services in other areas.
