Heroic cave diver awarded honorary degree from Aston University after being part of the complex operation that rescued a trapped football team last year in Thailand.
Richard Stanton MBE GM, a civilian cave diver is to receive an honorary degree after his part in the operation that helped rescue 13 members of the Thai Wild Boars football team.
The young boys became trapped after heavy rainfall flooded the passage to the Tham Luang cave last year, Richard was drafted in because of his expertise and unique knowledge of underwater cave exploration, having devoted much of his life pushing how far he could persue the activity he loves so much.
The 58-year-old kick-started his passion whilst at Aston Diving club during his time studying at Aston University between the years 1979 and 1982. He then went on to become a firefighter with the West Midlands Fire Service for 25 years before retiring in 2014.
It was there that Richard received ‘Hero of the Year’ award. Richard’s passion has taken him all across the globe and he has become known as the man to call upon to save lives or recover bodies in difficult circumstances.
Richard is one of 13 honorary degree recipients from Aston University during this summer’s graduation ceremonies. Each recipient has been selected for distinguishing themselves in a particular field or profession or for giving meritorious service to the University.
